Driving Responsible Gaming at DraftKings

September is the American Gaming Association’s Responsible Gaming Education Month. To celebrate, we’re highlighting our Chief Responsible Gaming Officer, Lori Kalani. This month is dedicated to advancing responsible gaming through enhanced education, training, and industry collaboration, making it an ideal time to highlight Lori’s pivotal role established to build upon DraftKings’ already robust Responsible Gaming program and further elevate player safety and protection initiatives across all facets of the company.

What Excites You Most About Your Role?

My role at DraftKings is incredibly meaningful to me and truly a full circle moment. Growing up in Las Vegas and the daughter of parents who both struggled with gambling disorders, I witnessed firsthand the impact gambling disorders can have on individuals and families. This personal experience has left me with a profound empathy for those struggling and a unique perspective on the critical importance of increasing awareness and making resources available to those who need help. The opportunity to work on issues aligned with my values is truly fulfilling.

After 15 years in private practice, where I worked with various clients, I’m excited to focus my efforts on a single organization. DraftKings represents growth and innovation, and being part of a team that is constantly evolving and building is thrilling.

Why Did You Decide to Join DraftKings?

I started working with DraftKings in 2015 and have always been impressed by the company’s mission and its people. Joining DraftKings full-time was a natural step for me, given my alignment with its commitment to a responsible and healthy gaming environment. In my role as Chief Responsible Gaming Officer, I have the chance to further enhance DraftKings’ commitment to responsible gaming and raise industry standards. 

What Was Your Involvement Like When You First Started Working with DraftKings?

When I first joined DraftKings in 2015, the company was relatively new, and Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) was still gaining traction. My role involved educating state attorneys general about DFS, ensuring they understood the policies and consumer protections we had in place to safeguard our players.

How Would You Describe Yourself as a Leader?

As a leader, I focus on building a strong, positive culture. I value transparency and approachability, creating an environment where my team feels engaged and inspired to achieve their best. I view my role as both a leader and a mentor, dedicated to supporting my team’s growth and success.

What Are Your Favorite Things to Do Outside of Work?

Outside of work, I enjoy a range of activities that keep me balanced and energized. I love skiing, boating, and gardening. Additionally, I take great joy in caring for my red-foot tortoises, each of whom is named after a rock-n-roll legend!
