A Career-Defining Migration To Our Mobile Platforms

Like all products in the consumer market, they need fine-tuning and thoughtful reiterations to keep up with technology and customer needs. In today’s market, where most transactions are done on a mobile device, our Mobile team constantly looks for ways to improve our products for the optimal experience.

In fact, our Mobile engineers are in the midst of a large migration of our iOS and Android apps. A migration of this magnitude rarely happens and could be a career-defining moment.

Meet Zack, one of the Engineering Managers on this team. Zack discusses the excitement and work currently being done to make this migration a success. Learn more below.

Tell us a little about yourself. When did you start at DraftKings, what is your role, and where are you located?

I’m Zack; I work remotely out of Chicago. I joined DraftKings in 2022, and I’m an Engineering Manager on our Sportsbook Native Mobile team.

Can you explain what Mobile Engineering is and what the team does?

Mobile Engineering, at its core, is building the best possible experience for anyone who interacts with any of our DraftKings products on a mobile device. Over the last several years, technologies for writing mobile apps have changed drastically, and keeping up with the change has become necessary to stay current. Our team is currently at this juncture - we are migrating to new foundations for our iOS and Android systems.

Migrations like this don’t happen often; it’s a huge career opportunity to be a part of this. For example, we’re migrating to the SwiftUI platform on iOS. Whether you’re an experienced software engineer or new to the Mobile space, it’s one of the best times to learn and grow as we enter a new phase on our team.

What makes your team’s work unique or different at DraftKings?

We rely heavily on other teams at DraftKings since we collectively work together for a bigger and better picture. Lots of hours and work go into our products behind the scenes. As a global team, we work around the clock and constantly gather feedback in real-time to move the needle forward. Our Mobile teams are essentially the last mile in the project.

I always tell people curious about working here that you don’t have to love sports, but you have to love delivering a great product. We are laser-focused on the user experience of the Sportsbook product across iOS and Android. This mentality sets us up for success in delivering unbeatable products.

How do you or your team embody “The Crown Is Yours?”

Our teams, in or outside of Engineering, are future-oriented. We are always thinking about the customer experience and how we can enhance every service and product we build.

We’re working towards the future across our apps. Every one of us owns a stake in the success of the transition. All the work that goes into this project is a huge undertaking, but we welcome the challenge and march towards progress. While migrations like this don’t happen often, our team always looks ahead for impactful changes that ultimately serve our customers.
